The Astbury article lisa mentioned was published, or at least some of the
earlier data: by coincidence I saw it in the pile in my study today:
Astbury J et al Birth events, birth experiences and social difference in
postpartum depression. Austr. J Pub Health 1994; 18 : 176-84
Some interesting bits: women who had been unable to hold the baby
immediately after birth were significantly more likely to be depressed, as
were women for whom unwanted people (whether family members, staff or
students) had been present at the birth. Women who did not breastfeed from
birth and women not breastfeeding at 3 months (in Oz, those failing,
usually due to horrid experiences rather than desire) were more likely to
be depressed. This is a very good study, world-class epidemiology by
researchers known and respected world-wide. I'm citing this in the revised
BFM, now in the hands of printers...will let you know on Lactnews when it's
available so please no further orders at present!
Hope I'm not duplicating a post here, but haven't logged on again and read
this post a day after downloading, and will send this before reading the
next lot. Maureen (who is always and only herself, Robert, though I'd love
to read the posts you may have got!)
