I believe that one of the biggest crimes is committed by the obstetrician.
For failure to set the tone in his office!
1) Mrs. Jones, will you be breastfeeding your baby?
2) Then directing Mrs. Jones to LLL and/or a good breastfeeding instructor,
not to a prenatal class that touches on feeding methods. It would take an
office person just a few hours to make some calls and type up a handout that
could be used for months, with an occasional call to verify the accuracy of
the list.
3) Have some nice framed posters or prints of breastfeeding couples
thoughout the office
4) Refuse to accept formula brochures and other handouts
5) Offer a selection of loaner videos for breastfeeding, infant care, etc.
6) Call LLL and other breastfeeding instructors to donate items, such as
copies of New Beginnings, catalogs, schedules, things for a gift pack
7) Have a tiny "for sale" shelf that includes several choices of good
breastfeeding books and videos
8) Have a visible copy of the Breastfeeding Answer Book for use by staff
and patients
