Hello everyone,

I was wondering if someone could give me some advice. I am working
with a new mom, first baby! He was born 5 days ago with a vacumn
assit and intrathecal. The first 24hrs he latched on only 4 times
with great difficulty, but was able to latch for the next 36 hrs or
so until moms milk came in. Mom is large breasted with nipples that
evert slightly, they do not invert when stimulated. Once the milk
came in however he refused to latch. He would cry, arch his back and
not calm when brought to the breast. Mom would try to calm him first
and reattempt to latch with no success. Mom did pump before hand to
alleviate the engorgement but still baby would not latch. Over the
weekend she resorted to feeding EBM via bottle. I saw baby today and
he gets very upset and will not calm down and move his tongue forward
to latch when brought to breast. I am having mom follow the
Breastfeeding Support Consultants care plan for the baby who wont
latch on and giving him EBM via finger feeding if after 3 or 4
attempts and he doesnt latch. Does anyone have any ideas how to
entice this baby to move his tongue forward and calm at the breast.
His tongue is capable of moving past his lower gum line, I saw him
latch real well on day 2 before he went home, but everytime he is
brought to the breast he gets upset, arhes his back and cries!
All of my text resources are on there way back to the states! I am
transferring in a few short weeks! Thank again, and email me
privately at [log in to unmask]
