Anne asked,
<< Has anyone ever heard, read, discovered an unusually high caloric
breastmilk? What do you think the absolutely top would be? what would
it look, feel like? Am working with an unusually large baby...hcp
wonders about a creamatocrit and I am wondering about values she might
expect to find. TIA Anne >>
I had a mom of a preterm baby who was burned in a fire (the baby, not the
mom). While on the burn unit, the nurses wanted to give the baby 24 calorie
Similac because (of course) the mom's milk only had 20 cal/ounce which wasn't
enough. The mom said, "test it." They did, after protest, three times. The
first time her milk was 27 cal/ounce; the second time 29 cal/ounce, and the
third time was 30 cal/ounce.
I'd be interested to know if there has been any kind of a study that has
looked at the caloric value of breastmilk when babies are older -- around 3 or
4 months. Susan Carlson, in one of the ILCA ISMs, I believe, indicated that
human milk increased to 26 cal/ounce at about 4 months. Has anyone else
heard, read, or seen documentation of this?
Jan Barger, in sunny Wheaton, where we are going to be going to my Jill's
wedding shower shortly. YIKES! In 3 weeks I'll be a MOTHER-IN-LAW! (That
sounds scary...)
