Any ideas how to handle this situation? We encourage BF within 1st hour after
delivery on our unit, watching for early feeding cues. Thereafter, we offer
the breast every 3 hours (if baby will take it) or on demand if baby wants it
sooner than that. Problem is, if baby is too sleepy post birth to nurse every
3 hours, pediatricians get concerned and tell moms to supplement with formula.
I tell moms it is normal for baby to be sleepy and not to worry. Some babies
go 5-6 hours after initial feed before nursing again. If baby is stable
vital signs, good color and tone, no need to worry. BUT then along comes pedi
who tells them blood sugar could fall and baby needs supplement. WHAT IS A
GOOD LC TO DO? TIA.
