Don't know what I would do without you guys. Here is the question posed to me
by the ICN nurse and soon to be LC when she gets her test results in October:
Do nurseries need to separate categories for one touches of newborns? For
instance, have different treatment guidelines for babies that suffer from
hypoxia, IDM, low apgar scores VERSUS babies that are well babies but that
happen to be SGA, LGA, baby of gestational diabetic mom, or a sleepy baby?
Right now we have TWO categories, A and B and they have different cutoffs for
their one touch treatment guidelines. The ICN nurse wants to fight for a one
touch reading that is used consistantly for ALL babies, REGARDLESS of whether
they are sick or well babies exhibiting some signs of hypoglycemia or not.
(Like an SGA or LGA automatically gets a one touch just because they are SGA
or LGA). Thanks for your input. Loni Denman, RN, IBCLC
