My credentials aren't all that great, but my interest and dedication
are. What are my credentials? I have a BS in tanother in Biology
(earned concurrently). I was lucky enough to take endocrinology from
Sue Carter (Porges) as an undergrad and learn about breastfeeding,
shared sleep, and reproductive biology in general. Then I stumbled
into an endocrinology lab to do undergraduate research.
Since graduating (in 1986!) I have been lucky enough to work in
several phsysiology research labs at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign and at the University of Colorado at Boulder. I took
some upper level genetics courses there, another endocrinology and
some human physiology. I intended to go to med school, but my
daughter was born and I withdrew my appps. A wise move, IMHO. :-)
Now I read read read, advocate breastfeeding, suggest what will work
for moms on parent-l, and attend LLL meetings. I don't think I want
to be a LLLLeader, although I want to attend the Leader sessions at
the Sunnyvale conference.
My questions are:
If you had my background, what would you do to be IBCLC?
How do I get the contact hours?
How do I find the people with whom to work?
Who in the Bay Area does the training?
What do Lactation Educators do?
Please fill in the blanks in my knowledge! The big blanks are How do
I get to Where I want to Go? Which is to work with women. I really
want to ensure that all who can nurse their babies.
Must tend the baby who really really wants the piece of broken
stemware I won't let her have. Amazing the persistance that appeared
in her at 17 mos!
