Lisa,
I am a breastfeeding mom with seizures and I am on Tegretol (Carbamazepine)
and my 4 month old baby girl seems to handle it fine. I would not feel
comfortable taking a seizure medication that I nor the doctor knew little
about. Not to mention the fact that the mother had only one seizure. I had
my first seizure at 26 (I am 27 now) and I was devastated. My neurologist
told me he would wait until I had another and I did when I was 6 months
pregnant. He then advised me getting on Tegretol. I had my family doctor and
my cousin, who is a dr. in Boston do research and the end result is that
Tegretol is compatible with breastfeeding. I would tell her to stay away from
any medication that isn't proven to be compatible with breastfeeding then I
would (nicely of course) tell her to lose that doctor. Why would the doctor
think it would be acceptable to try new seizure medication on a nursing mom?
I would question this doctor's competence.
