This is my first post to lactnet, although I have been lurking for some time
now. I am a non-R.N. IBCLC working in an inner city hospital in Baltimore as
the contract LC (as opposed to being an employee.) We have 2500 to 3000 births
a year, with a level 3 NICU. Prior to working in the hospital (began Feb.'97)
I was in private practice for more than 10 years, and I have been a LLL Leader
for almost 20 years.
Yesterday we had 33 week triplets born, all in good condition. The two boys
weighed 1220 and 1230 grams respectively, and the girl weighed 1540 gm. Mom
plans to breastfeed and has begun pumping. What I need are guidelines for
pumping for her to establish supply for three. I've worked with many moms of
twins, but these are my first newborn triplets. Should she pump longer right
from the start? (My instinct says try 20 to 30 minutes double pumping q2-3
hours rather than the 10-15 usually recommended for a singleton Mom.) All I've
found in the texts is "establish supply by pumping" with no further guidance.
I tried to send a search command to the archives but it was rejected, so
please send any help you can to me privately as well as to the list. TIA.

Severna Park, Maryland which is just north of Annapolis (home of the U.S.Naval
Academy and also the capital of Maryland) and about 20 miles south of
Baltimore, in the beautiful Chesapeake Bay area where it was sunny and in the
high 60's today, but quite windy.
