Marie-We can sympathize with your feelings of burnout. We receive and process thousands of telephone calls/month on our Mother's Helpline. Mothers constantly want to transfer the "responsibility for their decision" to us when they have sore nipples, sore bottoms or bad husbands. Our current protocol is to realize that breastfeeding can only succeed if MOM wants to do it. We can't provide the motivation....only the correct answers to provide interventions when things are not going well. We have found that, when you put the decision back in the mom's hands, she either picks it up or leaves it behind. If she leaves it behind, it probably wasn't her choice to start with. You have simply become one of her reasons to NOT breastfeed. We refuse to let these moms make us her reason. A simple questions will separate the moms who "want to" vs. the moms who "want a reason NOT to" breastfeed. What is the question? "Who made the decision for you to breastfeed?" A simple question...but it elicits a complicated answer. If the answer is anything other than "ME", it's not going to work. You can move on to the mom who answers "ME", and spent your time in pursuit of a much more likely success. Don't get discouraged...there's a mom right around the corner who will praise your efforts. Elena Medo, founder, White River Concepts
