Jack, your warning about nipple shields is timely. I do use them, and I do
find that they can facilitate latching in circumstances where the mother is
about to abandon further efforts to breastfeed - as *a last resort*, as you
say. Personally, I am very reluctant to use them for sore nipples, although
this appears to be their main marketing indication. I have joked that these
little gadgets will put us out of business, because they may seem to be the
answer for every little breastfeeding problem. Lately, I am extremely
disconcerted to find that nursing staff are calling me in to see patients
and *expecting* me to provide shields! However they really are *not* the
quick-fix solution to every single problem and they cannot substitute for
the time/skills it takes to identify the problem and offer other and
frequently better strategies. I agree that we need to be extremely cautious
with them and continue to hone our skills so as to minimize their use.
