Dr. Jack,
Is there any medical reason that you can see to be concerned about
cross-contamination in a mother of twins if said twins get sick requiring
mother to wash nipples with soap or anti bacterial agent?
I, an LLLL & IBCLC, and my husband , a family practice PA, believe that
#1- contagion was present before babies or mother ever symptomatic, and
#2 - mother's body will provide specific antibodies #3 - breastmilk will
take care of most bacteria or viral agents #4 that washing the nipples
will disturb this process.
But need documentation to convince MD. Thought of your article from
several years ago in Scientific American - would clearly present role of
breastmilk but don't know if it covers specific concern re:
cross-contamination.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Kathe Catone
