I am working with a second time mom - this baby was born at
35 weeks, after 2 weeks of bed rest (Brethene and
Betamethasome) - contractions and partial placental abruption.
Baby weighed 6# 10 oz at birth, went done to 5# 12 oz at one
week. Baby has a soft cleft palate defect - just the soft palate.
They have been told that there is nothing that can be done
(such as an obturator) because it is just the soft palate. Baby
has very poor "suction".....mom is using SNS (before and after
weight showed only 5 cc intake after 10 minutes on one side).
Does anyone have any advice for me to share with this mom -
the surgery to correct the defect will not be done until the
baby is 6 months old - and mom is very determined to give the
baby breastmilk (she is pumping - and is exhausted!!).
Thanks....
