Thanks to all who responded to my post about triple antibiotics. Turns out
that the pharmacy suggested a 500 mg dose of Gentamycin IV everyday (instead
of 80mg three times/day) because doctor wanted patient to get jumbo doses. No
studies done on such a heavy dose of Gent. Stanford Drug Center confirmed
same. Stated because this is such a large dose, they could not recommend
continuing to breastfeed. I was able to show the pharmacist my current drug
references on Cleo and Erythro in Hale's book. She had no idea I had such
resources and was thrilled and said from now on she would refer her
pharmacists to me for any drug questions related to breastfeeding. She said I
might want to check on the high dose of Gent with Children's Hospital in
Davis, but I didn't get a chance to yet. I suggested that when in doubt like
that, had it occurred to hear to have the mother pump and dump ONE time, after
the high Gent dosage, then nurse the baby as usual the other times. She
admitted she hadn't thought of that. At least that way this baby wouldn't
have missed being at the breast completely. Loni Denman, R.N., IBCLC
