Kathleen B,
I recently worked with a couplet that even w/ the SNS baby was taking
only 5, 10, 20cc, which was NOT enough. So My advice was to get calories
in by bottle at that point, and I'm glad others agree with this. Keep
supporting the milk supply and keep cuddling skin to skin of course and
work on effectively bf when baby is out of the woods.
As far as followup, I would suggest a return appt if it is more than
just a few minutes to phone and check on them. Charge your regular fees
for the appt. My pediatrician does similar to this. If the child is
pretty sick and needs to be checked over again, return in 2 days or next
day, whatever. If the child should be ok after the one visit, he tells
me to call him the next day and let him know how we are doing. No charge
for the phone call, but of course a charge for the office visit.
