Barb,
A. Lucas has reported several landmark studies about the advantages of
breastmilk. Two important ones were:
Lucas, A., & Cole, T. (1990). Breastmilk and neonatal necrotising
enterocolitis. Lancet, 336, 1519-1523.
Lucas, A., Morley, R., Cole, T., Lister, G., & Leeson-Payne, C. (1992).
Breastmilk and subsequent intelligence quotient in children born preterm.
Lancet, 339, 261-264.
One or two months ago he also argued forcefully in British Medical Journal for
a strong role for formula companies in education about infant nutrition for
professionals and parents. He does not believe that there are any ethical
problems in this role. This surprised me as I assumed that anyone who had such
significant research findings about the benefits of breastfeeding would be
suspicious about the aggressive marketing of formula companies.
