Dear Julie, I've always used the rule of thumb 'if mom is awake, the drugs
have basically left her system'. Otherwise she'd still be asleep!!  She may
want to pump a bottle or two because she might not be comfortable enough to
nurse immediately after, but pain meds aren't usually a problem.  Same day
surgery is a benefit because she can nurse baby right before checking in at
hospital.  Having had gall bladder trouble years ago after the birth of my
2nd child I'd go for it before her insurance dries up.  It can progress to
absolutely need rather than an optional sort of surgery. Sincerely, Pat in
