Although saliva may not be a mode of transmission, the possibility of
breaks in the skin and irritation early on particularly for the mother who
has never nursed would constitute a risk if the baby had any open sores,
etc. Also the fact that most babies do bite at least once and generally
while teething when we know the gums are irritated would also be a risk
that is very real.
