Although I cannot comment on the specific case described of a premie, now home
on BM plus fortifier, your comment to read the label is appropriate. BUT, BM
fortifier (as imperfect as it is) is NOT given for the calories!! We use it
for the added protein, calcium and phosphorus. Mature breastmilk does not
have enough to ensure optimal growth rates for very low birth weight premies.
We are sending infants home LONG before they were due to be born. They cannot
be equated with term infants when they are discharged!
