I am hesitant to say "wrong". What I have done with good response is to
tell a mother ever so gently that there is a lot of research out there and
that many MD.s don't have the time to read it all. Perhaps they would be
interested in this article. I have suggested that they share it with their
HCP and discuss it. Some do, some don't. I NEVER say "you SHOULD....." I
really HATE  the words; should, must and have to.  I also encourage moms to
dialog with their HCP's, giving them the encouragement to question what
they have been told. I remind them that the HCP is employed by them.

Most of the moms I work with seem to have fairly good relationships with
their MD's, even the ones who typically recommend early weaning. I have not
seen a negative impact on "my" moms; they wean when they are ready and
no-one hassles them. Hmmmm.

I think it is helpful to remember (when we are feeling frustrated, or even
angry) that most health professionals got into their work BECAUSE they
care. They do not intend to give poor quality care. They may feel
threatened.  I know many of you deal with this every day, from people who
aren't trying to be thoughtful of you, and offer you no respect. As we
create more informed consumers the health world will begin to change.
