Dear Fellow Lactnuts,

I have a question that I was wondering if I could get some help with. A
mother called yesterday that had what she described as normal postpartum
bleeding for 6 weeks. At 3 months postpartum she had a return of her
1st menses which lasted for 3 days. Seven days later she started
bleeding again this time lasting for 4 days. Eight days later she again
started bleeding and is still bleeding 5 days later. She describes
these as heavy flow bleeding. I know that cycles can be sporadic in the
early months after returning, more commonly being shorter with a longer
space between them. Mother feels that something is wrong and went to OB
who told her that "as long as she was going to nurse it was going to be
this way" which of course didn't make her feel very positive. My
question: is this just a variance of normal, or might there be a
problem, and if so what should we be looking for?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
