Dear Diane W.,
In my experience the amount of colostrum that women are able to
expresss in the first few days varies considerably. We usually have them
use an electric pump. Some women get nothing, or just a few beads of
colostrum on the nipple the first time they pump and it gradually
increases with each pumping. A few women get an ounce or two total the
very first time they pump. Most women seem to get about 5-10 cc per
breast. With small amounts, we tend to use a periodontal syringe to feed
to baby, for larger amounts, a cup or syringe. If it is literally only
drops of colostrum in the flange, we sometimes mix with a little glucose
water.
