Hi all...I'm still "nomail" but thought I'd give my 4th grade daughter's
science experiment results, especially after so many of you were kind
enough to offer suggestions.  This was an experiment comparing
microorganism colony counts (it was a bit too sophisticated for her to
determine and understand if the colonies were bacterial, gram+ or gram-,
etc) in fresh breastmilk, formula that sat out for 2 hours, for 4 hours
and 5 hours, after the formula had been previously drunk from.  She
created a scenario of 2 families shopping during the holidays, who are
out of their houses for several hours.  One family breastfeeds over the
hours, and the other feeds the baby formula from 2 different bottles, one
of which the parent saves from an earlier feeding.  Results?  Breastmilk:
10 colonies.  2 hour formula: 25 colonies; 4 hour formula: 50 colonies; 5
hour formula that was a previously drunk bottle: 100+ colonies.  The
interesting part to me was that during the parent visitation time to see
all the 4th grade experiments, my daughter said some parents seemed
"offended" (her word) by the experiment.  She entitled the project: "Food
for thought: what are you feeding your baby?"  Perhaps it got some
parents thinking (or the younger teachers who will be pregnant in the
future...).
