The post of the mother suffering from chronic depression ( query about Prozac
40 mg. dose), with the baby diagnosed with reflux sent me into my files to
find this:
Zachary Stowe, Maternal Depression: Impact on Infant Health, summary of
symposium presentation made at the American Psychiatric Association annual
meeting, Toronto,1998.
Study of 17 bf and 15 bottle-feeding moms with major postpartum depression.
Stowe reported an increase in occurence of GI illness for babies of each group
( 7-fold for bf, 16-fold for bottle fed). He noted reflux diagnosed in 17
babies ( but doesn't state how many of these breastfed in abstract). The
summary notes that these increases in occurence of GI illness resolved when
mother's depression was effectively treated. Details on reflux diagnosis and
as what constituted effective treatment not included.
