Dear Pearl, The latest issue of Contemporary Peds has an excellent
supplement on diaper derm.  One of the unusual types mentioned is
"acrodermatitis enteropathica: a rare autosomal recessive disorder of zinc
deficiency that often presents as diaper dermatitis, the condition begins
one to two weeks after weaning in breastfed babies or at 4-10 weeks of age
in those who are bottle-fed.  Untreated, the condition can lead to short
stature, delayed puberty, or even death."  It goes on to say and show what
it looks like, dx test and tx.  My read on this is that it is an inborn
error, has no relationship to BF and in most cases breast milk provides
enough zinc.  It is only when BF is stopped that condition becomes
apparent.  I didn't see original article, but it sounds as if they need a
