O Wise ones,

I have a 5 week old baby whose mother is beside herself.  (Isn't that an
interesting expression?  Visualize it....)  Anyway, for the past about 2-3
weeks, the baby has been bf, on average, 15 - 18 times a day.  Mom is a bit
frustrated.  Baby's weight is terrific -- she was 7-5 at birth, 8-15 at 2
weeks; 11-0 at 4 weeks, 11-8 today, 6 days later.  Mom said she's given
breastmilk in a bottle; baby will take no more than 1 to 1 1/2 ounces; refuses
any more, and then wants to eat again 1 - 1.5 hours later.  Mom has a lot of
milk -- when she pumps, gets about 3 to 4 ounces each side.  I've had mom
nursing at least two times to a breast before going to the other side to try
and increase fat content of obtained milk.  Before anyone says anything about
"this is how babies are supposed to eat, and the Kung women nurse 60 times in
24 hours" this is an American woman who doesn't WANT to bf this often!  Baby
is happy and content, "as long as she gets her food."  She won't be put off,
and is very definite about eating when she wants to eat, and quitting when
she's done.  I had her in today, we did an ac/pc weight just for fun -- within
5 or 6 minutes, punkin took 1.9 ounces and quit.  Refused any more.  Perfectly
happy and content.  According to my calculations, she "needs" about 30 ounces
a day to maintain her weight -- well, at 1.5 to 2 ounce increments, she needs
to bf about 15-18 times a day.  Its as though her tummy simply won't hold any
more at one feed....

Suggestions?
