A mom in my support group who has a four month old baby, exclusively
breastfed, who has occasional blood flecks in stools. Pedi. advised mom
to stop nursing and feed Nutramigen. Mom refused after smelling and
tasting formula. Baby also refused!!! Baby is growing very well, has no
stomach upsets. What do you all think? Thank you, Dawn Staudt-Vanek
*****I suggest getting this child referred to a pediatric gastroenterologist
for evaluation. I have several friends with a connective tissue disorder that
have been told by their mothers that their more serious GI difficulties began
when they were weaned, and most of these folk's gastroenterologists support the
notion. Has the child been evaluated for allergies to something in the
mother's diet? What color is the blood? Has the mom tried an elimination
diet? What is the stool like that comes around the time that the flecks
appear? Are any anal fissures apparent? Are the "flecks" really flecks or are
they appearing in the stool more as streaks, if it is possible to determine
this :)? What does the stool smell like (foul, or rotten or whatever)?
I know some of these are a bit much, for starters, but they might get everyone
thinking along more productive lines than formula.
