I love it: "We shall overcome"

I often preface my suggestions with what the doctor is concerned about so that
mom knows that I understand the problem & the physician's concern. ex "Your
doctor is concerned that your baby is not getting enough to eat." Then I
explain how she can know if her baby is getting enough & also explain NORMAL
jaundice, weight loss, eating & diaper output in the first week of life.

THEN, there is the pediatrician who almost ALWAYS tells the moms to supplement
until the milk comes in. He usually prefaces that with, "your baby has lost
weight." WELL, it's normal for babies to lose weight in the 1st day!!!!!!
Ooops, starting to rant. In that case I simply state that this doctor & I have
discussed supplementing all newborns and that we have different points of
view. Then I give my explanation & leave it up to mom-hoping that mine makes
more sense than his.

I do work with some really great doctors & nurses, BUT sometimes a few of them
can really get me riled. That's why we have a select group of colleagues, like
those here on Lactnet, to sound off to.
