I, too, think that there is a place for non-IBCLCs to practice by helping
moms with basic breastfeeding information and support *and* referring
for more help when appropriate. The issue we are struggling with in
Oregon WIC is what to call these people????

We contract to have professional level WIC staff (RN or RD) attend a six
day intensive course on the management of breastfeeding problems.
These staff then become the most knowledgeable person about
breastfeeding in their WIC clinic (and in some very rural areas, their
community). While we don't want to confuse the consumer, we also
want to have a "title" for these people that is consistent throughout the
state. Any words of wisdom from both IBCLCs and nonIBCLCs would
be greatly appreciated!
