I'm finding this discussion very interesting. I was unaware of its use for
prem babies and will certainly follow up some of those references - thank
you for posting them.  When the transcript of Marshas talk becomes available
could someone post it too please.  However, I must admit I have grave
reservations about how this knowledge will be used against mothers with no
indication to even look at their milk.
I happened to be reading Milk, Money and Madness yesterday.  Let me quote
from it:

(this is early 20th century mm'ent)  " When mothers were having problems
nursing or the infants weight gain was less than expected, some breastmilk
was collected by the nurse and analyzed for fat content.  If the mother's
milk contained less than 3% fat, supplementary feeding was prescribed.
Today ......  One American woman, when told by her pediatrician (who did not
even examine her breasts or milk) that her milk was no good, changed
doctors.  her new phyusician sent a sample of her milk to a dairy for fat
analysis.  The note cam back, "Dear Mrs.... If you were one of my herd I
would keep you!"
