Today Oct 7,1998 the RLAF (Right Livelihood Award Foundation) gave a
1998 Price to IBFAN (International Baby Food Action Network).
IBFAN shasres the award with Samuel Epstein (USA), Juan Pablo Orrego
(Chile), Katarina Kruhonja and Vesna Terselic (Croatia).
The RLAF founded in 1980, has given awards to honour and support those
offering practical and exemplary answers to the most urgent challenges
facing us today. The idea came from Jakob von Uexkull, a Swedish-German
philatelic expert.
IBFAN got the award "for its committed and effective campaigning over
nearly twenty years for the rights of mothers to choose to breastfeed
their babies, in the full knowledge of the health benefits of
breastmilk, and free from the commercial pressure and misinformation
with which companies promote breastmilk substitutes" The RLAF calls on
governments everywhere to legislate according to the World Health
Organisation's International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk
Substitutes, and challenges the companies which continue to break and
bend the Code to put the health and lives of babies before their
profits.
CONGRATULATIONS IBFAN
