I agree with Dr Gail that residency (and internship) is a great time to get
a word in for BF. Copies of Hale and Riordan & Auerbach will go a long
way, either in the resident gathering room, hospital library or maternity
unit. The idea of prizes at Grand Rounds is a good idea too, with flyers
on how they can get their own for everyone else! 1. Our competition is
well funded. 2. Residents don't have big bucks and have other priorities,
BF is nice but not as necessary as the infectious disease book. 3. A
little spending on the part of local BF groups (whether LLL, NM, ILCA
chapters etc) will go a long way to influence their impressionable young
HCP minds.
We are having a contest for world BF month (yes I said month). We are
offering a Hale to ped office(also WIC office) with best bulletin board
(they have to submit pix). Another Hale to each Hospital that participates
in a lobby display and a pizza party for the maternity unit that wins. The
lobby displays will be judged by an impartial team. My mom always said you
can get more bees with honey than vinegar! This won't cost us big bucks,
but look at all the BF publicity that each office & hospital is doing and
we don't have to do it! They're doing the work! We also said NO formula
co monies or materials could be used in display and referred them to local
LLL, WIC & ILCA for WBFW info. For about $150 I think we are going to get a
tremendous return on our investment!
Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
