Our project, Proyecto Lacta, has been working for 3 years to educate health
care professionals and provide clinical services for moms who don't have
the income for the local LC's. In teaching the HCP's here in Puerto Rico,
I have found
1. that it was not helpful to give them lots of handouts - they lost them
or threw them away.
so - I give them (charged for it in the course costs) a booklet which is
addressed to moms but which has the basic information they need such as
Pam Wiggins or Amy Spangler's books. (these are available in Spanish for
our needs)
2. that they enjoyed videos,
so - I use parts of videos such as "Breast is Best" and many others to
intersperse my talking about different areas - kangaroo care (UNICEF
video), Cup Feeding (ILCA Conference video), etc.
3. that they will not use the books I use for reference until they are
interested enough to buy them themselves. (Lawrence and Riordan &
Auerbach) So I hand out a list of references and resources which
includes the means of ordering them and a brief description of each. By
the way, Lawrence's book translated to Spanish is WONDERFUL - now when
can we get the new R&A done???
but - we were given some special funds by some special friends of mine,
and I did give away Medications and Mothers' Milk to the low income
clinics in our area and have found they have been using them.
However, in our area doctors and nurses are paid much less than in the
mainland US, and the suggestions I have may not "translate"...
