Sorry, I lost the original post on this subject, but if I remember
correctly there was a question as to whether a mother was narcoleptic
because she fell asleep in labour?
It is actually not uncommon for labouring women to fall briefly
asleep during labour. A mother who has had a long labour and has
been given a narcotic such as demerol or fentanyl will quite often
sleep for some time, but even undrugged mums often take mini-naps
between contractions. During transition (the worst part, just before
the pushing stage), when you would think no-one could possibly sleep,
some people do indeed drop off. (However, I've never heard of anyone
sleeping during second stage).
