Hello, I just returned from a 2 day conference in Hershey, PA where Dr. Paula
Meier gave a talk on Breastfeeding and the Premature Infants. Creamatocrits
were part of her discussion. It was very interesting. At Rush where she works
the mothers do their own crits for their babies. It is discussed how much
hindmilk the mother needs to obtain to achieve an adequate wt gain in the
preemie at he beginning of his life. Dr. Meier has an article written on the
subject which will explain it much better than I can-It was very interesting
to see the baby's weight increase when given a certain % of hindmilk content
as opposed to composite milk. The mother freezes her foremilk for later use.
Dr. Meier refers to it as Lactoengineering.
Here are the articles-
Griffin T, Meier P, Bigger HR. Can mothers of preterm infants perform
creamatocrits accurately on their expressed milk? Research Project sponsored
by Department of Maternal-Child Nursing, Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical
Center, Chicago,1997.

Lucas A, Gibbs JAH, Lyster Rlj, et al. Creamatocrit: Simple clinical
tecniques for estimating fat concentration and energy value of human milk. Br
Med J 1989; 1:1018-1020.

Meier P, Vasan U, Meier W, et al. Lactoengineering of own mothers' milk for
preterm infant feeding. (Manuscript in preparation).1997

I hope this is helpful.
