Hello again. I'm just back from a month long holiday and have had an
intriguing question put to me by a client. Her baby is 6 weeks old and
had gained 3 lbs. in the past 4 weeks. Mom describes herself as having
"TONS of milk". The baby has been regurgitating with almost all feeds
since the first week, but is very contented. About 2 weeks ago, the
regurgitation began to contain solid chunks which are an offwhite
colour. Mom frequently has to clean it out of the baby's mouth as the
chunks are sometimes the diameter of small walnuts, but often resemble
cottage cheese. The baby frequently chokes during feeds due to the fast
letdown and chokes on the larger chunks of regurgitation. The baby
feeds well and quickly, draining the breast in 15 minutes, including
feeding and changing time. Mom is offering one breast per feed and
feeding baby in an upright position. Baby eats every 2 - 3 hours during
the day & every 4 - 7 hours at night. She has lots of wet and dirty
(mustard yellow) diapers in a day. Mom had one occurrence of a plugged
duct, which cleared in a day & has not recurred. Baby hiccups
frequently and often sounds congested. Neither Mom nor Dad have any
familial history of food intolerances and Mom is eating the same diet as
when she was pregnant. TIA for any suggestions you might have.
