Dear Lactnetters:
I will be attending WABA's Seminar on Breastfeeding, Women, and Work at
the beginning of June.
In order to make the most of my attendance at the seminar and to
appropriately represent the interests of LCs and breastfeeding support
professionals worldwide, I am asking for your input. Please consider
the following questions and send your responses to my private email. I
am especially interested in comments from non-U.S. lactnetters and
anyone working with worksite support separate from a Sanvita program.
Breastfeeding Support Professionals might be IBCLC's, peer counselors,
other health professionals (RN, MD, Occ. Health RN, and LLL Leaders.
- What do you see as the role of breastfeeding support professionals in
worksite bf support?
- What are LC's/BSP's doing currently in your parts of the world?
- Would/is there a role for creating/managing worksite bf programs in
your country? (along the lines of the Sanvita system in the U.S.)
- What is the typical pattern of women returning to paid work separated
from their babies? How old are the babies before the return?
- What are bf-related issues that working women face?
- What are the opportunities for or provision of on-site creches, etc?
- Would LC's be too specialized or too limited in availability for this
type of program?
- What socio-economic differences among breastfeeding women and working
women are present that may create significant differences in their needs
and appropriate support approaches?
- What economic forces and pressures are present that encourage women to
seek wage labor as primary breadwinner for the family?
- What significant health, development, and household economics issues
might be present in your area that would promote breastfeeding over the
mother's return to paid labor separated from the baby?
Thank you so much for your insights and input. I look forward to
hearing from you.

P.S., when you respond, please let me know where you are reporting from
(country, city).
