I hate to disagree with Dr. Jack but I am not clear that breastfeeding
is more difficult in early weeks. I think it is for some people but for
many more it is much easier. One of my selling points for breastfeeding
is the not getting out of bed at night. I always tell my clients that
if my children would have been bottlefed, they would have starved to
death at night. My night feeding routine was put the kid to breast and
go back to sleep. I can't figure out how it would have been easier for
a minute to get out of bed, dink around with mixing and warming while
dealing with a screaming child.
I also see bottle feeders who are difficult to feed, need to have wet
wipes on their feet to keep them awake and so on. I hauled my son all
over the United States as an infant, it was easier since I didn't have
to worry about formula, bottles or sanitation. So when I talk to
pregnant moms, I try to sell them on the prepackaged convenience food,
breastmilk.
