In response to Jan Barger's query about the use or non-use of actual names
(with *s in the place of letters), here is the OFFICIAL Co-MOTHERS' reply.
Discussion of products in a professional manner is fine as far as that
goes. We believe that most all people currently on LACTNET (writers as
well as lurkers) are professionals who will accept the different viewpoints
for what they are: the opinions, impressions, clinical observations and
conclusions of INDIVIDUALS.
Unfortunately, we have no way of knowing how many people on LACTNET (we
suspect in the "lurker" category) are just waiting to "pounce" on such
well-meaning sharings in order to use them AGAINST the poster(s). This has
happened in the past and we are NOT interested in contributing to a legal
action against anyone.
Therefore, we have posted (in our welcome message) the admonition to
refrain from using brand names/manufacturers' names when discussing
products publicly. Obviously, taking discussion privately (NOT on LACTNET)
is subject to no such restrictions.
We appreciate the potential confusion currently occurring between what is
newly available from Ameda-Egnell/Hollister and what has been available for
some time from Avent.
If any of you wise women has a better idea than what we came up with to
reduce the likelihood of legal action, please share it with us. We do not
intend to quash discussions, only to reduce the potential for unexpected
legal action against one or more of our subscribers.
