find that some mothers will listen better and follow the directions of an
LC that they are paying than the same advice given for free by me. I have
several times referred to a good local LC who calls me back and says that
she told the mom the same thing I did but it worked because the mom took
her information more seriously and followed the instructions.
This was one of the reasons I decided to be an IBCLC, the other reason being
the hope that local HCPs would take me more seriously. There will always be people
who believe that *you only get what you pay for.* Two very good examples of this can
be taken from the business world.
Boots Chemist (in England) used to offer an excellent range of toiletries
and cosmetics under their own label, but sales were poor. When they re-designed
their packaging, changed the brand-name and raised the prices, guess what happened?
WeightWatchers started off by charging very low fees in the hope of
attracting lots of customers. They were surprised to find that it was only when they
UPPED their fees did people start coming in droves. Even more surprisingly, more
people lost more weight when they paid more.
Silly, isn't it? But hey! if that is what works....
