This is a very abbrieviated story, here goes:
Mother had a caeser yesterday morning, elective, second pregnancy,
baby hasn't had a feed since, it is now 36 hours old. Baby not
latching on. Blood glucose, 3.5 mmols, baby voiding heaps. Baby has
not had any other fluids, is starting to look jaundiced and the
midwives have noted 2 epidsodes in which the baby is a little blue.
Baby also very mucousy. This is not my patient, is my husbands, I am
hoping to get some ideas on what the story could be with this baby.
The night staff have just rung up and feel the baby needs fluids.
Another doctor was present when the midwife was going to do a Blood
Glucose, he stated that the readings were irrelevant in newborns,
She then rang up my husband. Between us we decided that the baby
should be fed EBM and AF for the night and he will review it in the
morning (he is not actually on call, he is not just been slack by not
going in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) What would you do after 36 hours?????? I am
not sure why this baby is voiding so much (don't know how much is so
much, the midwives just said it is voiding heaps), can that be
explained?
