3 months ago one of the nurses on the ward came to me and said "Don't talk
to the mom in room x about breastfeeding. Her baby is dying." I immediately
headed for room x where I found a 16 year old mom whose 24 weeker was in
the NICU weighing 1.3 lb. Mom took the pump. She used it for about a month.
Baby is now 4lb or so (I guess from looking), Mom is holding baby for long
periods and baby is due for tranfer to a hospital near Mom's home. I
praised mom highly for her pumping and she glowed about it. One month is a
big success in my book. And I really wonder whether the baby WOULD have
made it if Mom had never given the breastmilk.
