Thank you to all who responded about nipple shields. Mom is reluctant to
mess with success so we are proceeding slowly with weaning from shield.
Thanks to all of you who suggested this approach. When I was a lay
counselor and training for the exam nipple shields were a big no-no I have
yet to get over my fear even though I have seen them work successfully a
number of times. Anything that keeps mom doing it is a positive because
she would have bagged it without the shield. She calls it a miracle and
is just thrilled that baby is eating from her and not bottle. Still doing
some supplemeting but she will pump after at least everyother feeding as
someone suggested. She was also open to rebirthing but wants to wait until
the cord falls off. Which we all no could be quite a while. I really
appreciate having this forum as I am in a rural area and there are only 3
IBCLC's in the county, me, the inpatient hospital LC, and a LLL leader. We
all are on Lactnet and don't know what we would so without it.
Now Terry Carson and I are working on a task force for the hospital ( 800
deliveries a year). Any one with a well functioning hospital based task
force have any suggestions to get us out of the starting gate ( the
Preakness is this weekend and horses are all you here about on the news).
Who is on it, how often do you meet, do you include outside agencies like
the health departmetn and WIC? Any assistance would be appreciated.
