These things do seem to come in threes. Right now I am working with three
moms with intractable sore nipples and all the babies have bubble palates.
One of the moms I think has yeast which is very persistent and is being
treated. But with the other two it is obvious that the baby's suck is causing
the soreness. Does anyone have any specific suggestions for positions or
techniques with this type of palate? The only thing I know is to try to get
the baby farther back on the breast, try different angles to get the nipples
to bypass the bubble, etc. Anything more specific would be helpful. Have you
all found that at that magic "3-4 months", it gets better? One of the babies
is a month old and the mom has been mostly pumping and bottlefeeding because
every time he nurses, the tips of her nipples get traumatized. I think in
this case, the baby's behavior at the breast is partly due to the long-term
bottle use, but can't say for sure since she just consulted me. She may try
an SNS, since she's supplementing anyway and he sucks more appropriately and
comfortably when the milk is letting down, so does better with faster flow.
TIA for any suggestions. Miriam
