Dear Lactnet Friends,
I have a case and need your help. Please email me directly as well as to
the list if you can help. The mother breastfed uneventfully for 9 months
and weaned gradually down to one feeding a day and finally none. On the 2nd
day of not breastfeeding, one breast became sore and felt full. She thought
it would go away, it didn't, got worse. After 5 weeks she went to a doctor
after not being able to pump or express any milk. She has been put on 3
different antibiotics, used theraputic ultrasound to "break up the milk
ducts", had an ultrasound to see if there was an abcess, tried sage tea,
cabbage leaves, hot and cold compresses. Her doctor does not know what to do
now. It has been two months since weaning and the breast is "huge", hard,
and solid all over. No fever. Does this sound like recurring mastitis that
was never resolved? No mention of any cultures being done. What can I
suggest? Mammogram? Thank you for any suggestions. Carroll Beckham, LLL Leader
