I have been contacted by a mother with a 19 lb. seven month-old nursling.
Mom just had back surgery and has been prescribed a 6 day Medrol dose pack.
She will take 4mg. tablets of methylprednisolone on a descending dose
schedule of six times a day on the first day, five times a day on the
second day, four times a day on the third day, etc, until the tablets are
gone.
She is also taking 5 mg. Percocet (oxycodone HCl) every four hours as
needed for pain relief.
The mother understood the pediatrician to say that the combination of the
two types of medications would be bad for the baby. The baby's
pediatrician has instructed the mother to pump and dump for the six-day
period that she is taking the steroids. The mother is reluctant to
temporarily wean and wonders if it is truly necessary.
Can anyone help me with this one? Thanks-
