I am sure the doctors indicated that the cyst is probably a thyroglossal duct
cyst - remnant of fetal development. They can be small or large. If the cyst
is very large it could compromise the airway, requiring immediate intubation
(if possible) or even tracheotomy. Delivery should be at a hospital with a
Level 3 NICU, Pediatric ENT surgeons and Neonatologists available. For the
last large one I was involved with, we had two pediatric ENTs (with fiber-
optic bronchoscopy equipment as well as a tracheostomy tray) and a pediatric
anesthesiologist with me (neonatologist_) at delivery. We left the umbilical
cord intact until the infant was intubated. The cyst was further studied with
an MRI after birth and then removed at 2 days of age, with goods results.
