Pat Young wrote, "There is a study on health benefits, I think, that shows
that being BF by smoking mom is better than being bottle-fed by smoking mom.
But I don't have that one."
Pat, I think it is Maureen Minchin's "Smoking and Breastfeeding: An
Overview", in JHL 7(4), 1991 pp 183-188.
Then there's "Maternal smoking during lactation: relation to infant size at
one year of age" RE Little, MD Lambert III, B Worthington-Roberts and CH
Ervin, Am J Epidemiol 1994; 140:544-54 (abstract in Feb 1995 BF Abstracts)
Breastfed infants of smokers were twice as likely to have a body mass index
more than one standard deviation above the mean than breastfed infants of
non-smokers - paradoxical growth of smokers' breastfed infants.
Annette, as to marijuana, there is a massive piece on marijuana during
pregnancy and a fair bit on marijuana during breastfeeding in "Drugs in
Pregnancy and Lactation pp 374 - 385.
