Hi All,
Well a bit of an update on PJ and his teeth. PJ will not be having his
surgury this Fri for a couple of reasons. THe first is because he (along
with the rest of the family) is sick. The second is because the
anesthesiologist is not sure she wants to put him under. Her reasons are these:
She is used to working with children age 2 yrs or 30lbs and up
The meds she uses have been safety tested for children 2 yrs or 30 lbs and up
She is not sure what his reactions to these meds would be as he is so little
(22 lbs)
She said that it can be difficult to get an IV with all the fat pads on
thses little guys.
She said that there could be problems with him being so little.
Simply put: She was honest enough to be up front about her concerns with me
(and I have a lot of respect for her for this) and is not really comfortable
working with an infant.

Now, she didn't tell me what drugs she uses except that the one to make the
kids drowsy is not valium, it is something that works almost instantly when
injected (starts with a K?). She told me what it was, but I can't remember.
She does want to see him on Friday (providing we are all feeling better) to
take a good look at him, his size, and the amount of fat he has. Do we have
any anesthesiologists here who can discuss this with me? It may be that she
decides that she can work with him, or she will say "no way" and we will
have to do it in the hosp. Are there drugs for general anesthesia that are
definite no-no's for children under 2 yrs or 30 lbs? What are your thoughts
on this? My biggest concern is that if she has never put an "infant" under,
and she says she is willing to do it, do I want her to? I don't think I
want my child to be her first infant, you know? She is very nice, and I
don't think she would be offended if I said 'No way".
Email me privately, please. Again, thanks to all who have repsonded with
such caring and concern for PJ and me. I have not been able to respond to
everyone, simply because there were so many of you who wrote to me! :) You
all are wonderful and are helping me so much. I feel much more on control
and confident with this situation.
Sincerely,
Jay
