I am helping a mother with a 2 1/2 wo babe. Mother was dx with bladder
infection Monday and prescribed Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim DS
800-160, 1 tablet 2xday for 3 days.

She called back the pharmacist, who said he would not recommend her
taking this. Dr said could prescribe Amoxicillin instead, but would
obviously take longer to to get rid of the bladder infection.

Hale's (1996) says SMZ is not reviewed, but suggests use with caution.
Lists TMP as approved by the AAP.

My questions: does anyone have a more current review of SMZ than my '96
Hales? Is the recommendation different? Would this dose, for 3 days, be
too much or too little to be of concern for such a young babe? Are there
other, similar drugs that could be substituted that she could ask her Dr
about, that would be better than Amox?

Thanks!
